With hundreds of brave people expected to head to the seaside on New Year's Day across Devon to join in organised events or just to start 2024 off with a cold dip, DevonLive has taken a look back through its archives to bring back some memories of annual January 1 swims from years gone by.

Among the most popular swims are in north Devon which see swimmers dressing up to take a winter paddle. A New Year's Day swim is being held this year at Hele Beach in Ilfracombe at 10am and it will be raising funds for the RNLI. A fancy dress dip in Westward Ho! will take place at 1pm.

Saunton Beach fancy dress dip will be at noon. It will be raising funds for not-for-profit organisations The Wave Project, Access For All and The Bluetit Chill Swimmers. The third annual New Year's Day swim will take place organised by Dartmouth Yacht Club from noon in aid of the Dart RNLI Lifeboat Station appeal.
